Job Summary
The Senior Manager/Director, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), is responsible for leading Algoma’s financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, investment and reporting functions, as well as detailed financial and strategic analysis for various initiatives. As a strategic advisor, the successful candidate will deliver accurate reporting and actionable insights to drive business growth, optimize profitability, and guide decision-making.
Job Responsibilities
- Synthesize data from different functional areas to create an accurate summary and expectation of company performance.
- Manage the planning cycle including the annual operating plan, budgets and rolling forecasts.
- Manage the preparation of the long-range plans, including coordinating the collection, review and analysis of key input assumptions and preparing analysis of the results.
- Develop standard costing models across all operations, updating periodically to ensure accuracy and relevancy of the data.
- Review financial statements and general ledger account details to identify and explain variances against budgets, forecasts and prior-year balances.
- Monitor, analyze and proactively communicate financial and operational performance trends, historical and forecasted, using appropriate metrics. Provide insight into trends, resulting implications, key actions, and strategic implications.
- Provide value-added insights and recommendations to senior management.
- Support management in analysis of new business opportunities, acquisitions and capital investments.
- Identify external benchmarks and develop internal metrics to measure and analyze business performance.
- Develop process and system improvements to streamline FP&A processes, creating efficiencies and scalability.
- Prepare proposals for capital initiatives with financial and cash flow projections, business case modeling, expected return on investment, and executive summary providing both qualitative and quantitative rationale.
- Provide commentary and presentation facts and analysis for Algoma’s external reporting and presentations.
- Create custom dashboards and online reports for leadership and executive teams based on user requirements.
- Provide leadership and coaching to staff in the accounting and finance teams, including work direction and prioritization.
- Support projects including business system implementations and upgrades, and implementation of automation initiatives across the finance team.
Skills, Abilities, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting or Finance or a related field.
- MBA, CPA, or CFA designation required.
- 10+ years of relevant financial experience, preferably in an asset-intensive industry.
- Five years of progressive leadership or management experience.
- Advanced knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
- Extensive experience in complex budgeting/forecasting, financial analysis, strategic modeling and management reporting.
- Advanced mastery of modelling in Excel and other analytical reporting tools. Experience integrating and implementing AI tools is a strong asset.
- Experience using large ERP software systems, preferably Workday, including Adaptive Planning.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and capable of working closely with and presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Exceptional project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects of various diverse scopes in a cross-functional environment.
