Captain

Job Duties:

The Captain is the Company’s management representative aboard the vessel and they are charged with the responsibility to support and protect the best interests of the Corporation in all areas of their job role.

The Captain’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the safety of the crew and any contractors, protection of the environment, the safe operation of the vessel and its cargo, and protection of the owner’s commercial interests. The Captain has the overriding authority and responsibility to make decisions with respect to safety and pollution prevention. The Captain is expected to perform his or her duties in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act and Regulations, Canada Labour Code, Company Policies and Procedures, and includes fulfillment of the Company’s committed requirements of the ISM Code and the ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 Standards.

This is a management position and is non-unionized.

Qualifications:

  • Master Mariner (preferred) or Master, Near Coastal Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada
  • Transport Canada Marine Medical
  • Specialized (Advanced) Oil Tanker Endorsement
  • General Operator’s License (GOC – GMDSS)
  • Pilotage Certificate within the designated GLPA areas (preferred)
  • Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Basic Safety
  • Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats
  • Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
  • Ship Security Officer
  • Marine Medical Care (preferred)
  • Bridge Resource Management
  • ECDIS training with proficiency in TRANSAS type (preferred)
  • Valid Canadian Passport or Canadian Permanent Residency
  • Valid US C1/D Visa, if required

 

Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years recent experience working as Captain on tanker vessels
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Knowledge of English language at a working level is required
