Job Summary:
The Superintendent oversees and directs day to day management of assigned vessels for all engineering and technical operations in accordance with Company policies and procedures as well as Government regulations and customer expectations. The incumbent will ensure safe and efficient vessel operations through established standards through associated shore and fleet personnel and required support services management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervises all vessel management events of an Operational, Engineering or Technical nature
  • Monitors Company owned and managed vessels’ visits and inspections
  • Creates, reviews, proposes and monitors budget for managed vessels
  • Oversees the procurement of spares and services related to budgetary controls
  • Provides input to insurance files related to hull, machinery and P & I claims
  • Ensures that Company objectives are communicated and implemented
  • Monitors and supervises the process for the tendering of specifications for dry-dockings, lay-ups and for major structural or machinery repairs
  • Liaises with Technical Support and Operations departments in regard to any requirement and planning
  • Provides support in regards to crewing requirements and planning, including training
  • Provides support and interface with marketing/traffic and customer service needs
  • Provides Company representation at industry bodies and organizations and authorities as required
  • Monitors regulatory changes within the industry and contributes to the application of those changes
  • Develops and implements Company engineering standards
  • Approves changes to PMs for managed vessels and coordinates with the Maintenance Planning group for implementation
  • Takes on additional responsibilities and tasks as advised by the Vice President, Technical Operations
  • Serves as a member of the Marine Emergency Response support team
  • Completes Performance Appraisals for managed vessel Captains and Chief Engineers
  • Provides oversight to the Master on vessel certificates for Class attendance, etc. for their renewal
  • Provides on call support to the fleet
Skills, Abilities and Experience:
  • Post-secondary education in Marine Engineering
  • Chief Engineer certificate of competency
  • 3 or more years’ experience as an Engineering Superintendent
  • Working knowledge of bulk carriers
  • Experience with self-unloading systems and multinational crews is an asset
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent organization, planning and prioritization skills
  • Able to create and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders
  • Effective meeting management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks
  • Self-motivated, able to work in a team environment and balance the needs of a number of individuals and the team
  • Capable of identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner
  • A creative, enquiring and logical mind
  • Ability to carry out incident investigations and analysis
  • Strong project management skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationship and interact with all levels of the organization and in multinational environments
  • Valid passport and driver’s license
  • No travel restrictions
