Job Description:
The Electrical Superintendent will manage the day-to-day engineering and technical operations specific to all electrical systems in accordance with company policies and procedures, as well as government regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Vessel Operations
- Provides direct support to vessels and superintendents for all electrical, and control and automation systems.
- Conducts vessel visits and inspections, ensuring vessels are maintained and comply with all relevant standards.
- Identifies and implements initiatives that will improve reliability of all electrical systems.
- Provides oversight and arranges the work of shore-side electrical contractors in cooperation with Operations Superintendents.
- Develops layup work specifications as required in cooperation with the Technical and Marine Superintendents.
Maintenance
- Oversees maintenance and repair of vessels specific to electrical systems, and control and automation.
- Monitors Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for execution of work, and updates PM system as required to improve fleet reliability in area of expertise.
- Attends vessels during out-of-service events as required to perform troubleshooting and facilitate corrective action.
Quality, Health, Safety, Environment & Regulatory
- Liaises with external authorities, including flag, class, and port state regulatory bodies.
Budgetary Control
- Provides and assists with budget preparation, and provides input to the Fleet Plan and the life expectancy of electrical systems.
People Management
- Provides onboard training to shipboard Engineering staff and assists with the development of relevant training programs.
Collaboration
- Coordinates efforts with both the Logistics and Purchasing departments to ensure the required supplies/equipment are sourced and delivered.
- Identifies new Contractors and Suppliers, and builds relationships to better support fleet requirements.
Stays current on the technology specific to the position and attends training as necessary.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education and certification in electrical, and control and automation systems.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience with responsibilities consistent with this position.
- A proven track record of success in technical (engineering) and managerial positions with relevant maritime organizations.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system is a definite asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Good communication skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent organization, planning and prioritization skills.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and to meet deadlines.
- Self-motivated, able to work in a team environment and balance the needs of a number of individuals and the team.
- Capable of identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner.
- A creative, enquiring and logical mind.
- Ability to analyze and interpret technical information and drawings.
- Ability to carry out investigations and analysis.
- Ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals.
- Strong project management skills.
- High degree of creativity and initiative exhibiting strong troubleshooting skills.
- Valid passport and driver’s license.
- No travel restrictions.
