The marine industry is rich in history, and Algoma has been a part of that history for over 100 years. Algoma’s origins trace back to its creation as a railway in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in 1899.
Algoma Central Corporation owns Canada’s largest fleet of vessels operating on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Waterway. This fleet consists of twelve self-unloading and seven gearless bulk carriers and seven product tankers. The Corporation has interests in ocean dry-bulk and product tanker vessels operating in international markets. The Corporation owns a diversified ship and diesel engine repair and fabricating facility active in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence regions of Canada. In addition, through Algoma Central Properties Inc. and Algoma Central Hotels Ltd., the Corporation owns and manages commercial real estate properties in Ontario.
The Corporation’s executive offices are located in St. Catharines, Ontario. The Corporation employs over 2000 people worldwide. Although our roots date back many years, Algoma continues to advance our business with new vessel acquisitions, significant investment in fleet and property repairs and upgrades, as well as with the introduction of our Equinox Class of vessels.
Shore-based careers with Algoma include a variety of opportunities in areas such as ship management, engineering, naval architecture, accounting, information technology, human resources and marketing. The requirements for these positions differ based on the level of responsibility of each position but, generally each position requires some post-secondary education.
